Emotional Conceptualization in Turkish and English Body Idioms

Abstract

imagery, which facilitates and vitalizes expression and communication. As building blocks of the human soul, emotions generally display themselves in non- voluntary body reactions or verbal expressions which are generally the embodied expressions of the physical reactions of the body in a specific situation. Body organs such as ‘face’, ‘eyes’ or ‘heart’ are frequently used in idioms to transmit certain emotions. Although emotions are universal, there may be cultural and cognitive differences among the idiomatic expressions of languages. In other words, languages may use distinctive ways to express an emotion and body parts are one of these variants. It is the target of this study to make a comparison between the conceptualization preferences of idioms and emotions regarding parts of the body in Turkish and English.

TÜRKÇE ve İNGİLİZCEDE DUYGUSAL KAVRAMSALLAŞTIRMANIN BEDENLE İLGİLİ DEYİMLER ÜZERİNDEN KARŞILAŞTIRILMASI

Abstract

Deyimler eğretileme özellikleriyle dil kullanıcılarına zengin bir zihinsel imge sunarak ifadeyi ve iletişimi kolaylaştırıp canlandırır. Duygular, her ne kadar farklı dillerde başka biçimlerde sınıflandırılıp adlandırılsa da evrenseldir. İnsan ruhunun yapı taşları olan duygular, genellikle istemsiz vücut tepkileri veya genellikle bedenin fiziksel tepkilerinin somutlaşmış ifadeleri olan sözel ifadelerle kendini gösterir. 'Yüz', 'göz', 'kalp' gibi vücut organları deyimlerde sıklıkla duyguların iletilmesinde kullanılır. Duygular evrensel olmasına rağmen, duyguların deyimsel aktarımları sırasında diller arasında kültürel ve bilişsel farklılıklar olabilmektedir. Başka bir deyişle, diller bir duyguyu ifade etmek için farklı yollar kullanabilir ve vücut parçaları da bu değişkenlerden biridir. Bedenin bölümlerine ilişkin deyim ve duyguların kavramsallaştırma tercihlerinin Türkçe ve İngilizcede karşılaştırılması bu çalışmanın amacıdır.
