The Ontology of Silence in Hernan Diaz’s In the Distance

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interconnectedness of language, space, nature, and objects in literature through the lens of Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO). In Hernan Diaz’s In the Distance, an ontological analysis is applied to the protagonist Håkan’s first moments in America, exploring his struggles with language, inner solitude, new surroundings, and his relationship with objects. Throughout the novel, objects are no longer passive; instead, they emerge as active forces that shape and react to the human condition. In the novel, space functions not just as a setting but as a force that influences and reflects the protagonist’s ontological state. From the perspective of Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), nature is understood as a withdrawn entity that resists full human access or comprehension. Håkan, isolated from language and environment, experiences silence and withdrawal, highlighting the novel’s ontological and aesthetic core. Ultimately, by connecting literary analysis with ontological inquiry, this study offers a new way of approaching contemporary debates in ontology.
