Sin, Stigma, and Social Steering in The Scarlet Letter: Ideology, Social Labeling, and Disciplinary Power in Puritan Society

Abstract

This study analyzes Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter from a socio-political perspective to ascertain the impact of sin, stigma, and social steering on the social power dynamics of Puritan beliefs. Liberal ideas such as liberty, individual rights, and the pursuit of pleasure historically conflict with restrictive religious ideologies and practices in America. The book dramatizes this tension within a societal conflict, which is nineteenth-century American society’s shift toward individualism and moral freedom, rooted in seventeenth-century religious and traditional traditions. The characters Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale show how religious, legal, and social authority shape people’s aspirations and identities in this conflict. Hester’s branding with the scarlet ‘A’ becomes an act of resistance rather than a punishment, allowing her to renegotiate her social status and demonstrate proto-liberal agency. Dimmesdale’s hidden guilt and transgression from societal and legal judgments devastate him psychologically and spiritually. The article claims that Hawthorne's character transformations attack Puritan oppression and presage nineteenth-century arguments about civil society, gender, and religious and social stigma by tying them to the Declaration of Independence.
