AN ANALYSIS OF YAHYA KEMAL’S POEM “VOICE” [SES]

Abstract

Yahya Kemal is undoubtedly one of the founding poets of modern Turkish literature. One of the main characteristics that distinguishes him from the poets of his generation is that he focused on the new experiments in inner musicality rather than the external elements in composing poetry. In this context, the main concept identified with the name of the poet in the history of Turkish poetry is “derûnî âhenk” [rythme intérieur] or “musical sentence” in poetry. In addition to producing poetry in internal rhythm, he was also writing essays on the musical devices in poetry, such as on internal harmony, internal rhythm or internal musicality. This shows that he wasn’t just enthusiastic about the art of poetry, but someone who thinks seriously about it.

This article aims to provide a close reading and interpretation of Yahya Kemal’s poem entitled “Ses” [Voice] in order to demonstrate how he distanced himself from the understanding of poetry based on the external world. This attitude in composing poetry based on internal harmony exemplified in this rubai allowed Yahya Kemal to produce a unique poetry that was different from other poets of the time. In examining his rejection of the notion of theme-oriented poetry describing the outside world and favoring pure poetry based on the internal harmony, the article also considers Nazim Hikmet’s “Today is Sunday” [Bugün Pazar] and Salah Birsel’s “The Poetry Lesson” [Şiir Dersi].
