ISLAMIC LEGAL EDUCATION IN AYYUBİD PERIOD

Abstract

The Ayyubid state that reigned in Egypt, Syria, Hejaz, Yemen and Anatolia between the 12th and 13th centuries, gained a respectable place in Islam history by defeating the Crusaders and liberating Jerusalem. It also became popular with the support it gave to the field of science and culture. Its contributions to the field of islamic law (fiqh) was dazzling. Although the existence of islamic education was known in the region before the Ayyubids, fiqh education institutions showed significant developments in the Ayyubid period. In this period, on the one hand, the rapid increase in the number of fiqh education institutions and on the other hand, the formation of a wide fiqh heritage draws attention. This article, which presents a description of the fiqh education in the Ayyubid period, is an example of the fiqh education in the classical periods of Islam. In the study, it is focused on the institutions of fiqh education, the fiqh sciences taught in these institutions, the financial opportunities provided for fiqh education and training activities, and how a jurist was educated especially in Damascus and Egypt, the centers of the Ayyubids. In addition, a description of the fiqh education of the period is presented by emphasizing the students of fiqh, works taught in the field of fiqh and ijâzet of fiqh, and the development of fiqh education.
