Barriers to Regular Physical Exercise Scale (BRPES): A Scale Adaptation Study

Abstract

In this study, the “Barriers to Regular Physical Exercise Scale”, developed by Pereira et al. (2023), was adapted from English into Turkish. The study sample consisted of 441 active athletes. To ensure linguistic validity, the procedures proposed by Brislin et al. (1973) were followed, including (1) initial translation, (2) evaluation of the initial translation, (3) back-translation, (4) evaluation of the back-translation, and (5) expert review. Content validity was established through expert opinions, while construct validity was examined using both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results of the CFA indicated that the AGFI, GFI, and χ² values demonstrated excellent model fit, whereas the RMSEA, CFI, and SRMR values were within acceptable ranges. Reliability analyses were conducted using internal consistency coefficients calculated for the overall scale and its subdimensions. The Cronbach’s alpha (α) coefficient was found to be 0.82 for the total scale, 0.62 for the environmental factors subdimension, and 0.80 for the personal factors subdimension. These findings indicate that the scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool for assessing the barriers encountered by individuals who engage in regular physical exercise.

Düzenli Fiziksel Egzersiz Engelleri Ölçeği (DFEEÖ): Bir Ölçek Uyarlama Çalışması

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, Pereira ve arkadaşları (2023) tarafından geliştirilen “Düzenli Fiziksel Egzersize Engeller Ölçeği”nin İngilizceden Türkçe’ye uyarlaması yapılmıştır. Ölçek uyarlama sürecinde araştırma grubunu 441 aktif sporcu oluşturmuştur. Ölçeğin dil geçerliliğinin sağlanmasında sırasıyla 1: İlk Çeviri, 2: İlk Çeviriyi Değerlendirme, 3: Geri Çeviri, 4: Geri Çeviriyi Değerlendirme ve 5: Uzman Görüşü adımlarını içermektedir (Brislin ve ark., 1973). Kapsam geçerliğinin sağlanmasında uzman görüşleri, yapı geçerliği ise hem açımlayıcı hem de doğrulayıcı faktör analizi aracılığıyla sağlanmıştır. Ölçeğe uygulanan Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) sonucu uyum indisi hesaplamalarında AGFI ve GFI VE χ2 değerlerinin mükemmel uyuma sahipken, RMSEA, CFI ve SRMR değerlerinin kabul edilebilir aralıkta olduğu görülmüştür. Elde edilen bulgular neticesinde; düzenli fiziksel egzersize engeller ölçeğinin geçerli ve güvenilir bir şekilde ölçen bir ölçüm aracı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ölçeğin güvenirlik çalışmaları, ölçeğin tamamı ve alt faktörleri için hesaplanan iç tutarlık katsayıları ile belirlenmiştir. Ölçeğin tamamına ait Cronbach alfa (α) değeri 0,82 olarak, çevresel faktörler alt boyutu 0,62 olarak ve kişisel faktörler alt boyutu için 0,80 bulunmuştur. Bu sonuç, ölçme aracının güvenir olduğunu göstermektedir. Elde edilen bulgular neticesinde; düzenli fiziksel egzersiz yapan bireylerin karşılaştığı engelleri ölçen geçerli ve güvenilir bir şekilde ölçen bir ölçüm aracı olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
