Herbart’s Philosophy of Geometry and Its Infl uence on the Riemann’s Geometry

Year 2015, Issue: 7, 105 - 118, 01.06.2015

Abstract

analysis and diff erential geometry and the other fi elds of the mathematics as well. In his famous Habilitationsvortrag he underlines important points on the very nature of space with respect to philosophy, mathematics, and physics. In this sense, sometimes the picture Riemann represents is called as “magic triangle consisting of mathematics, physics and philosophy. So, it is possible to see that interest for philosophical issues goes hand in hand with Riemann’s mathematical studies. In this context we see Johann Friedrich Herbart, a professor at Göttingen until 1941, appears in philosophical background of Riemann’s studies. In this paper, I aim two things: First, I will investigate the relationship between Herbart’s philosophy and that of Kant’s with respect to former’s conception of space and geometry. Second, after representing views concerning to which extent Herbart’s ideas gave a way to Riemann’s studies and his concept of manifold, I will claim that Herbart’s infl uence on Riemann is seen in the epistemology and conceptual methodology of mathematics

Herbart’ın Geometri Felsefesi ve Riemann Geometrisi Üzerindeki Etkisi

Year 2015, Issue: 7, 105 - 118, 01.06.2015
