İslam Dünyasında Dost Sayılar ve Abdullah Kütâhî’nin Ferâidu’l-Funûn Eserindeki Yansımaları

Abstract

Bu makale, sayıların tarihsel gelişiminde özel bir yeri olan dost sayıların (amicable numbers) İslam dünyasındaki izini sürmekte ve Osmanlı âlimi Abdullah Kütâhî’nin Feraidu’l-funûn adlı ansiklopedik eserinde bu konuya nasıl yer verdiğini incelemektedir. Dost sayılar, her birinin pozitif bölenleri toplamı diğerine eşit olan sayı çiftleridir. Bu sayılar, Pithagorasçı düşüncede dostluk, birlik ve ahenk gibi değerlerle ilişkilendirilmiş; tılsımsal ve sembolik anlamlar kazanmıştır. Makale, dokuzuncu yüzyılda yaşayan Sâbit bin Kurre’nin bu sayı türüne dair ortaya koyduğu teoremi ayrıntılı biçimde ele alır. Kurre, dost sayıların sistematik üretimine yönelik matematiksel bir yöntem sunmuş ve bunu ispatlamak için çeşitli önermeler kullanmıştır. Bu teorem, klasik Yunan matematiğinin ötesine geçen bir soyutlama düzeyi sunar. Abdullah Kütâhî’nin eserinde dost sayılar bölümü ise bu teorik çerçeveyi İbn Sînâ’nın eş-Şifâ adlı yapıtından da etkilenerek aktarır. Kütâhî, dost sayıların sadece matematiksel değil, aynı zamanda mistik, folklorik ve kültürel boyutlarını da ele alır. Feraidu’l-funûn’da teoremle birlikte bazı önermeler sunulmakta, ancak tam bir ispatına yer verilmemektedir. Bu çalışma, İslam entelektüel tarihinde matematiksel kuram ile kültürel yorum arasındaki etkileşimi vurgulamakta; matematiksel fikirlerin yerleştiği daha geniş felsefi ve sembolik çerçevelere dair önemli bir bakış sunmaktadır.

Amicable Numbers in the Islamic Scientific Tradition and Their Representation in Farāid al-Funūn By ‘Abd Allāh Kutāhī’s

Abstract

This article traces the historical development of amicable numbers, a class of numbers in number theory, in the Islamic world, with a particular focus on how this topic is presented in Farāid al-funūn, by the eighteenth-century Ottoman scholar ‘Abd Allāh Kutāhī (d. 1784). Amicable numbers are pairs of distinct positive integers such that the sum of the proper divisors of each number equals the other. The Pythagorean philosophy associated these numbers with friendship, harmony, and mystical symbolism. The article examines the significant theoretical contribution of the ninth-century polymath Thābit ibn Qurra, who proposed a general theorem to generate amicable numbers. His method, which employs a set of auxiliary propositions, represents a level of mathematical abstraction beyond that of classical Greek arithmetic. Kutâhî’s account in Farāid al-funūn draws upon both Ibn Sīnā’s al-Shifāʾ and Thābit ibn Qurra’s risalah. While Kutâhî presents the theorem and some related propositions, he does not provide the full proof. He addresses not only the mathematical structure of amicable numbers but also their mystical, folkloric and cultural significance. This work highlights the interplay between mathematical theory and cultural interpretation in Islamic intellectual history, offering insights into the broader philosophical and symbolic frameworks within which mathematical ideas were embedded.
