TRACE OF FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE İN AHMET MİTHAT EFENDİ’S “FELȂTUN BEY İLE RȂKIM EFENDİ”
Abstract
This study was
established as a result of analitical reading and based on character analysis.
The characters in the novel were evaluated directly and a complete subjective
approach was presented. Depending upon such a proposition, the effect of
A.Mithad Efendi’s view to French language and culture and to Turkish society was tried to be presented.
After the proclamation of reforms, the era that began
with the translation of western novels into our language and written of similar
ones left its place into new works. Ahmet Mithat Efendi was one of the most
important writers of this era who had produced every kind of novel to prepare
the society for social and literary amendments. In his novel “Felȃtun Bey ile
Rȃkım Efendi” he not only compared the western and the eastern culture but also hardworking and
honesty with Rȃkım Efendi; laziness, squandering and westernism with Felȃtun
Bey. Writer had changed the prejudice of the western society about Ottoman
Turkish guys with the ethical, cultural and spiritual values. While the writer
was criticizing western women with Polini and French female cook in Ziglas
family, he also praised the eastern women with Canan.
