Abstract

It seems that these are no dogmas except of the three main division of Western Christianity to discourage scientific research were Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism and Calvinism. Some great scientists will be found among all three. All three confessions held that contemplation of nature may lead the mind to God, the Maker of all things. On the other hand, there was also a general warning that, the study of nature may turn the mind away from God. When the Middle Ages sought edification in nature, it was for the purpose of illustrating spiritual truths, not of conducting scientific study. İn cases where a scientific study of nature was recommend as useful to religion

Abstract

Öyle görünüyor ki, bilimsel araştırmanın yapılmasını engelleyici veya cesaret kırıcı işlevleri bakımından, Batı Hristiyanlığında; Roma Katolikliği, Lutherizm ve Kalvinizmden başka dogma bulunmamaktadır. Yine de bu üç mezhep içinde büyük bilimadamlarına rastlamak olasıdır. Her üç mezhebin iman ikrarı, doğayı tefekküre dalmanın dimağı Tanrıyı düşünmeye sevk edeceği, yaratıcının her şeyi yaratan bir kudret olarak farkına varılacağı içeriğine sahiptir. Diğer taraftan ise, genel bir uyarı sürekli olarak yinelenmektedir: Doğa ile yakından ilgilenmek, ister istemez, kişiyi Tanrıyı anmaktan koparacaktır. Orta Çağlarda zihnin doğadaki olgular üzerinde eğitilmesi, yalnızca, ruhani gerçeklerin betimlenmesi maksadına odaklaşmış olduğu için, bilimsel araştırmanın gerektirdiği bir tutumu oluşturmuş değildi. Tabiatın bilimsel araştırmalara konu edildiği hallerde, daima, dine yararlı olması gerektiği tavsiye edilmekteydi
