PROPAGANDA IN 18TH-CENTURY OTTOMAN DIPLOMACY: THE “TRANSLATION” OF TÂRİH-İ SEYYÂH AND DIPLOMATIC DISCOURSE

Abstract

This article examines the translation, publication, and distribution of books in 18th-century Ottoman diplomacy through the lens of diplomatic discourse and propaganda. Judasz Tadeusz Krusiński, a Polish Jesuit missionary, witnessed the fall of the Safavid dynasty to the Ghilzai Afghans in 1722 while in Isfahan and recorded his memoirs in Latin. The book was translated into French and published in Paris in 1728. Shortly thereafter, it was translated into Turkish and printed at the Müteferrika press in 1729.

By comparing the content of both versions, the article analyzes how the case of Seyyid Abdullah Khan, the ruler of Hoveyzeh—a key figure in the fall of Isfahan—is portrayed in each text. It argues that the Turkish translation contains significant differences aligned with Ottoman policy toward Iran and highlights that this translated work, one of the first printed at the Müteferrika press, was distributed as a diplomatic gift to various European states in the 1730s and 1740s. The study thus positions “translation” as a crucial medium for constructing diplomatic discourse and an essential tool of propaganda.

18. YÜZYIL OSMANLI DİPLOMASİSİNDE PROPAGANDA: TÂRİH-İ SEYYÂH “TERCÜME”Sİ VE DİPLOMATİK SÖYLEM
