Investigation of Pounding Effects in Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Different Story Levels

Abstract

Reinforced concrete buildings should be able to move freely during an earthquake. However, the construction of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings as adjacent configuration restricts the free displacement of buildings. Serious brittle damage occurs especially in buildings constructed adjacently at different story levels. This study investigates the pounding effect between adjacent reinforced concrete buildings using nonlinear time history analysis. For this purpose, two reinforced concrete buildings were designed without any gap between them. Reinforced concrete frames have been designed as single-story and three-story structures. Then, nonlinear time-history analyses were performed to show the pounding effect between these two buildings. Furthermore, the additional shear forces that could occur in the columns during an earthquake due to insufficient gap distance were determined. The analyses revealed that the pounding effect caused by insufficient gap distance increase shear forces applied to columns approximately 3-4 times.
