Sociocultural Adaptation of Immigrants and Attitudes of Local People Towards Immigrants

Abstract

According to the World Migration Report, the number of international migrants is 272 million, forming approximately 3.5% of the world's population. This mobility caused by unemployment, poverty, wars, natural disasters, and political changes brings global and national adaptations. Governments that face migration are affected socially, politically, and economically and pushed to develop new policies in these areas. In this context, the socio-cultural adaptation of immigrants and the attitudes of local people are regarded as a priority by policymakers to minimize the side effects of migration. So, this study aims to determine the level of socio-cultural adaptation of immigrants, the attitude of local people, and the correlation of these. The present study is a quantitative research with an accessible sampling. The results reveal that the socio-cultural adaptation level of the immigrants is moderate and does not differ significantly according to gender, age, residence time, and nationality. Also, the attitude of the local people towards immigrants is average and does not differ according to gender, age, recurrence migration experience, marital status, education level, and occupation. Yet, there is a low level of significant positive correlation between the sub-dimension of the adaptation scale, “personal interests and social participation”, and the overall attitude of the local people and the “threat” sub-dimension.
