METAPHORS ABOUT “SPORTS” OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE STUDYING IN SOME FACULTIES OF DÜZCE UNIVERSITY
Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the metaphors of university students about "sport". The sample of the research, which was organized in five different departments (Mathematics and Science Education, Basic Education, Social Sciences and Turkish Education, Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Internal Medicine (Medical Pharmacology) of three different faculties (Education, Medicine, Sports Sciences) of Düzce University in 2016-2017 academic year, constituted 208 university students. The data were obtained with the help of university students by completing these sentence of ''Sports are like ..., because ...''. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to analyse of the data. As a result of the study, 104 different metaphors were identified in 18 categories about ''Sports''. The most metaphorical categories were sports as a peace-happiness-giving element (50 metaphor), sport as a health-giving element (39 metaphor), sport as an essential element (38 metaphor), potentiative contributing factor (13 metaphors), sports as an element of interestand an element to be given labor (13 metaphors). Also, 113 of the participants whose metaphors were accepted playsports as hobby or licensed, while 71 of them do not play sport as hobby or licensed. As a result, when there search findings were evaluated as a whole, it was determined that the students have positive perceptions towards the sport in the metaphors they produced about "Sports".
