Use of the Ram Effect (RE) in Estrus Control and Its Importance in Sheep Breeding
Abstract
In this review, ram affect used for estrus synchronization in Sheep and applying method have been investigated in sheep breeding.
Estrus in sheep are seen at certain times of the year only due to the seasonal breeders, so they are the most efficient way to spend
periods of reproduction is required. Ram effect stimulate the reproductive efficiency of sheep as neural and hormonal by the effect
of pheromones in wool, wax and urine that stimulates the ewes to ovulate. There are two methods applied such as ram effect and
using of exogenous hormone. Here are the most economical way for the sheep breeders is to use of the ram effect.
In this method, All ewes were prevented from visual, sound and odor contact of rams between for 4-6 week being isolated at a
distance of at least 2 km from the males than rams are joined to the herd again. After joining the rams, the Luteinizing hormone
(LH) secretion increases and ovulation is induced in many of the ewes.
As a result, "the ram effect (RE)" can be considered as an alternative method to hormone applications due to both practical and
economic aspect.
