Retrospective Analysis of Tetrathyridiosis Cases in Cats and Dogs in Hatay Province Between 2015 and 2022

Year 2024, Volume: 17 Issue: 1, 26 - 30, 30.06.2024

Abstract

Peritoneal tetrathyridiosis is a rare parasitic disease that occurs accidentally in various operations or necropsies due to its usually asymptomatic course in cats and dogs. However, tetrathyridium can cause chronic peritonitis with ascites and even fatal consequences in cats and dogs, sometimes. In this study, the prevalence of tetrathyridiosis cases was investigated in 897 cats and 12 057 dogs brought to Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Stray Animal Care and Rehabilitation Center for ovariohysterectomy and orchiectomy between 2015 and 2022. Small, white larval-like structures found in the peritoneum, mesenterium and omentum parts of the animals were placed in vials containing a 10% formalin solution. They were then transferred to the Laboratory of the Department of Parasitology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Hatay Mustafa Kemal University for examination. As a result of the parasitological examination, it was determined that these small structures were tetrathyridium, the second-stage larva of Mesocestoides spp. Tetrathyridium was found in 4 of 897 cats (4♀) (0.44%), 17 of 12 057 dogs (15♀, 2♂) (0.14%) and 21 of a total of 12 954 animals (19♀, 2♂) (0.16%) during the ovariohysterectomy and orchiectomy operations. This retrospective study investigating the presence of tetrathyridium in cats and dogs in Hatay province is the first study in Türkiye.

Hatay İlinde Kedi ve Köpeklerde 2015-2022 Yılları Arasında Tetrathyridiosis Olgularının Retrospektif Analizi

Year 2024, Volume: 17 Issue: 1, 26 - 30, 30.06.2024
