Effects of Age and Sex on Hematological Parameters in Thoroughbred English and Arabian Horses

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the hematological parameters in Thoroughbred English and Arabian horses, as well as to determine whether age and sex factors have an effect on these parameters. Hematological parameters (RBC, HCT, HGB, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, WBC, NEU%, NEU, LYM%, LYM, MONO%, MONO, EOS%, EOS, BASO%, BASO and PLT) were measured in a total of 116 clinically healthy racehorses, 46 (23 male, 23 female) Thoroughbred English and 70 (38 male, 32 female) Arabian horses, aged 3 and 4 years. In the study, it was determined that the breed factor was effective on the levels of MCV, NEU%, NEU, LYM% and EOS% in Thoroughbred English and Arabian horses, but did not affect the other parameter levels. NEU%, LYM% and LYM values in Thoroughbred English, and MCV and MCH values in Arabian horses were affected by sex factors. While LYM% and LYM levels in Thoroughbred english horses were affected by age and sex variables, in Arabian horses, no difference was determined between stallions and mares in terms of all hematological parameters depending on age and sex.

Safkan İngiliz ve Arap Atlarında Hematolojik Parametreler Üzerine Irk, Yaş ve Cinsiyetin Etkileri

Abstract

Bu çalışma safkan İngiliz ve Arap atlarında hematolojik parametreleri belirlemenin yanında yaş ve cinsiyet faktörlerinin bu parametrelerin üzerine etkileri olup olmadığını saptamak amacıyla yapıldı. Hematolojik parametreler (RBC, HCT, HGB, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, WBC, %NEU, NEU, %LYM, LYM, %MONO, MONO, %EOS, EOS, %BASO, BASO ve PLT) klinik olarak sağlıklı 3 ve 4 yaşlı 46 adet (23 erkek, 23 dişi) İngiliz atı ve 70 adet (38 erkek, 32 dişi) Arap atı olmak üzere toplam 116 adet safkan yarış atında ölçüldü. Çalışmada safkan İngiliz ve Arap atlarında ırk faktörünün MCV, %NEU, NEU, %LYM ve %EOS düzeyleri üzerine etkili olduğu, diğer parametre düzeylerini ise etkilemediği saptandı. İngiliz atlarında %NEU, %LYM ve LYM değerleri, Arap atlarında ise MCV ve MCH değerleri cinsiyet faktörlerinden etkilendi. İngiliz atlarında %LYM ve LYM düzeyleri yaş ve cinsiyet değişkenlerinden etkilenirken, Arap atlarında aygır ve kısraklar arasında tüm hematolojik parametreler yönünden yaş ve cinsiyete bağlı olarak bir fark belirlenmedi.
