Lateral Nail Resistance of Plywood Produced from Different Tree Species
Abstract
Metal fasteners such as nails, screws and bolts are used as fasteners in the application of solid wood and wood based composite materials in wooden construction. The durability of the connection points is influenced by many factors. In this study, five ply plywood panels were produced using rotary veneers from beech, eucalyptus, poplar threes. The tree type of panels were produced as single species plywood (beech, eucalyptus and poplar), and two type of panels were produced as combination plywood (beech-eucalyptus-beech and beech-poplar- beech). The lateral nail resistance, deformation at maximum load, density and moisture content of the plywood panels were determined. The lateral nail resistance tests were conducted according to ASTM 1761. The ring nail was used in experiments. According to obtained data; the lateral nail resistance of beech, eucalyptus, poplar, beech-eucalyptus-beech and beech-poplar-beech plywood were 3296, 2757, 2134, 2964 ve 2489 N, respectively. According to obtained data; it was determined that three species and combination type affect significantly the lateral nail resistance of plywood.
