Premenstrual Syndrome in Midwifery Students of a University

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome is a health problem that is most commonly seen adolescence, which negatively affects lives of girls, their attendance at classes, school success, and social life. This study was carried out in order to determine premenstrual symptoms of the students in Elazığ Health High School Midwifery Department. The universe of the descriptive and relationship-seeking study consisted of 182 students who were attending to Elazığ Health School Midwifery Department 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades in 2010-2011 academic year. No sampling was made, all of research universe was included in study. On the day of collection of data, 172 students were taken to investigation because 10 students were’nt in class and didn’t accept participating in study. As data collection tool, questionnaire developed by researcher using literature scanning and Premenstrual Evaluation Scale were used. Data were evaluated with SPSS 15.0, and mean, standard deviation and percentage were calculated. Pearson Chi-Square test was used to examine relations between categorical variables. The average Premenstrual Evaluation Scale score of students was 112.6±32.0. According to results of the research, it was detected that of the students 60.5% experienced depressive mood, 51.2% were fatigue, 43.6% were depressive thinking, 32% were irritablity, 19.8% had anxiety, 8.1% had appetite changes, 7% had bloating, 5.2% suffering from pain. 92.4% of the students stated that they did not use cigarettes, 61.6% drank tea frequently, 79.7% drank coffee rarely, 93% made occasional exercise, 87.8% stated that they had no chronic disease. There was no significant relationship between duration of menstruation, oral contraceptive use, and menstruation scheme with premenstrual syndrome in the study.
