Abstract
Birth, as well as being a natural process that includes biological, psychological, and cultural processes, is an experience that gives excitement, happiness and fear at the same time. The perception of birth changes from person to person. It is presumed that the birth perceptions of students who have not experienced the profession of nursing and at the beginning of their journey, to be similar to those of individuals in the society, before taking the course of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It has been observed that the pregnant women are more harmonious and less worried during birth when the pregnant women and their families are informed accurately and sufficiently and are advised by the health care workers. The nurse must firstly know his/her own feelings about birth and recognize his/her emotions to be able to give this assistance. This study was designed to reveal feelings, thoughts, perceptions and cultural perspectives of the nursing students regarding childbirth. This is a descriptive study using qualitative methods. Data of the study were collected by sociodemographic information form and semi-structured interview forms after performing three focus group discussions. Data obtained with the interviews were qualitatively evaluated by using inductive analysis. Twenty-eight female and 8 male students were included in the study. It was found that children’s perspectives regarding childbirth were generally positive, but they also had fears regarding childbirth. Almost all of the students stated that they developed a more realistic perspective for childbirth after taking the course of childbirth and women health nursing.
