Management of Microvasculer Complications in Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract
The incidence of microvascular complications, such as diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy in the patients who are uncontrolled or not treated well, has increased. These complications lower the patient's quality of lives, shorten life, cause economical and manpower loss while resulting irreversible sequels in patients. Although the most important factors for developing complications are blood glucose level and the duration of diabetes; hyperlipidemia, hypertension, smoking, genetics and age have roles as risk factors too. Some interactions between microvascular complications are also found. For example, the diabetic retinopathy and high blood pressure are meaningful risk factors for progression of diabetic nephropathy. A significant relation is also between diabetic peripheric neuropathy and diabetic proliferative retinopathy. Blindness, renal failure and amputations which could be evolved due to microvascular complications may be reduced by early diagnose and regular blood glucose level and blood pressure controls.
