Moral Courage: Description, Relation with Moral Distress and Moral Sensitivity and Improvement

Abstract

Moral courage, which is defined one's making a decision according to ethical and moral values by taking into consideration the possible outcomes and taking action accordingly when faced with a dilemma or situation, is considered one of the basic values of nursing profession. Moral courage is closely related with moral sensitivity and moral distress. In the presence of ethical problems, being able to be aware of and describe these problems requires individuals to have a high level of moral sensitivity. People with a high level of moral sensitivity experience more moral distress in the ethical problems they face, which encourages them to take more courage to solve ethical problems and take action. Ethical problems are frequently encountered in health services and nurses play an important role in solving these problems. What can be done to develop moral courage can range from the level of professional education to the country policies at large. In this article, it is aimed to draw attention to the concept of moral courage, shed light on its relations with moral distress and sensitivity, to emphasize the importance of the subject in terms of nursing profession and to make suggestions about how it can be improved.

Ahlaki Cesaret: Tanımı, Ahlaki Sıkıntı ve Ahlaki Duyarlılık ile İlişkisi ve Geliştirilmesi

Abstract

Ortaya çıkan etik bir ikilem veya durum karşısında, bireyin etik ve ahlaki değerlerine göre, muhtemel sonuçları göz önüne alarak bir karar vermesi ve bu karar doğrultusunda harekete geçmesi olarak tanımlanan ahlaki cesaret, özellikle hemşirelik mesleğinin temel değerlerinden biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Ahlaki cesaret, ahlaki duyarlılık ve ahlaki sıkıntı ile yakından ilişkili bir kavramdır. Etik sorunların varlığı durumunda, bu sorunların farkına varılabilmesi ve tanımlanabilmesi, bireylerin ahlaki duyarlılıklarının yüksek olmasını gerektirmektedir. Yüksek düzeyde ahlaki duyarlılığı olan kişiler ise, karşı karşıya kaldıkları etik sorunlarda daha fazla ahlaki sıkıntı yaşamakta, bu durum da onları, etik sorunların çözümü için daha fazla cesaret göstermeye istekli kılmakta ve harekete geçmeye teşvik etmektedir. Sağlık hizmetlerinde etik sorunlarla sık karşılaşılmakta ve bu sorunların çözülmesinde hemşirelere önemli rol düşmektedir. Ahlaki cesaretin geliştirilmesi için yapılabilecekler mesleki eğitim düzeyinden başlayıp ülke politikalarına kadar uzanabilmektedir. Bu makalede ahlaki cesaret kavramına dikkat çekmek, ahlaki sıkıntı ve duyarlılık ile ilişkisini açıklaştırmak, konunun hemşirelik açısından önemini vurgulamak ve nasıl geliştirilebileceğine ilişkin öneriler sunmak amaçlanmıştır.
