The Relationship Between Compliance with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice and Journal Sustainability in Scientific Publishing

Abstract

The sustainability of journals in Türkiye has become a very important and topical issue. However, there is no current study in the literature on analyzing the sustainability of journals in comparison with transparency principles. In this study, the relationship between principles of transparency and best practice and journal sustainability was investigated and it was evaluated whether journal sustainability was related to compliance with the principles of transparency and best practice in scientific publishing. In this study, all 45 peer-reviewed journals in Türkiye in the field of economics and administrative sciences on the DergiPark platform were selected as the study sample in order to minimize the confounding factors. The compliance of journal sustainability indicators of these journals in the 2015-2020 period, such as publication status (activity-continuing publishing or stop publishing), annual published volumes, annual manuscript submission numbers, annual number of published articles, rejection rates, common volume or issue issuance were compared with 16 principles of transparency and best practice items. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the compliance of the journals with the transparency principles and especially the ethical principles should be increased. It has been concluded that the high rejection rate, the publication of more issues per year, the use of the DergiPark submission system and cover by the indexes increase the sustainability of the journal.
