Clinical Applications of the Brunner-Munzel Test

Abstract

The Brunner-Munzel test is a statistical method used to compare means between two independent groups, particularly when normal distribution assumptions are violated or group variances are not homogeneous. Similar to the Mann-Whitney U test, it evaluates differences in medians using ranked data but does not assume equal variances among groups, making it a more flexible option. In medical research, the Brunner-Munzel test is applied to evaluate the efficacy of new treatments, compare the effects of varying medication dosages, and assess the performance of medical devices. Unlike the Mann-Whitney U test, it is more suitable for scenarios with unequal group variances. Variance difference, which assesses whether group variability is homogeneous or heterogeneous, is typically evaluated using techniques like ANOVA. The Brunner-Munzel test is critical in medical statistics, particularly in cases involving non-homogeneous group variances, making it an invaluable tool in clinical research.
