Examining Trends in Studies Involving the Use of the GeoGebra AR Application in Mathematics Education

Abstract

This study systematically investigates the content, format, and methodological features of educational research involving GeoGebra AR software. A comprehensive search using the keyword “GeoGebra AR” across Google Scholar and YÖKTEZ yielded 165 records. Of these, 63 studies directly employing GeoGebra AR and examining its educational impact were selected and analyzed using content analysis, following Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) five-stage framework. The selected studies were categorized by publication year, country, type, method, sample size, education level, authorship, language, theoretical framework, instructional domain, purpose of use, and reported outcomes. Findings reveal a rising trend in publications between 2019 and 2024, with Brazil leading in research output. No studies from Türkiye were found. Most were journal articles using mixed methods, primarily focused on higher education. English was the dominant language (70%), followed by seven others (30%). STEM was the most common theoretical framework, and geometry was the leading instructional domain (62%). GeoGebra AR was used to teach mathematical concepts and model real-life or architectural objects. While limitations such as technological issues, time constraints, and reduced engagement over time were noted, they were less emphasized. Positive outcomes included increased student motivation (59%) and improved visualization and concretization (37%). Overall, the findings suggest GeoGebra AR enhances learning effectiveness, student engagement, spatial and critical thinking, modeling, problem-solving, mathematical connections, and personalized instruction. These results support its continued use and further exploration in international educational research.
