Terminological Problems and Typological Approaches Related to the Rural Settlement of Turkey
Abstract
The first and in a sense, the most important problem of geography of rural settlement in Turkey has been the patterns of rural settlement, the definition of these pattems in the best way using the most valid criteria and the clasification of these patterns differentiating the certain types.
Another terminological problem has arisen from the houses which we can describe as interesting examples of the traditional or local residential architecture from the construction of these houses and from the local names, given to them on account of their interior divisions and the additional parts.
There is also the misunderstanding of terminology employed in the interior and exterior forms of space arrangement of these houses 4n the spaces providing a way out betvveen these two parts and in other architectural elements which give a kind of functional purpose to the organization of the space. It is nearly impossible to explain the geography of rural settlement in Turkey by isolating it form its historical and cultural background.
For this reason, it is a necessity for the houses to be documented starding with the earliest cultural layers in Anatolia; the typological characteristics related to these houses should be brought fonvard; and the relationship between locational cultural values and the historical heritage mentioned above.
