Glacial morphology of the Mescit Mountain (NE Anatolia)

Abstract

The Mescit Mountain which is located 50 km north of Erzurum city, had been covered by the glaciers during theWürm period of the Pleistocene. The lenght of the mountain is about 30 km in direction of N-S, and the width of it is nearly 20 km in direction of E-W. The height of the summit region of the mountain varies 3091 and 3239 metres.

In the middle part of the Mescit M. there are five main and/or big cirques. The small cirques and the cirque lakes also occur within the big cirques For example, In the Yedigöller cirque, which covers an area of 12 km2, there are seven cirques at the height of 2740, 2795, 2860, 2875, 2945, 2975 and 3105 metres. The cirques and cirque lakes are stationed in steps.

It can be said that the Pleistocene glaciation in this mountain took place in the last glacial phases, namely Wiirm glaciation. In addition, glacial features show that the study area had been subjected to two glacial epoch. These cpochs may belong to two glacial periods or theWürm glacial and its stadial, as W1 andWürm2 stadials. The climatic snow line of the Mescit Mountain auring the glacial periods had an average height of 2750 ± 50 metres.
