Although greenhouse cultivation has been doing since 1970 in the Urla-Seferihisar area, number of greenhouses has increased more rapidly after 1980. In fact that 75 per cent of the greenhouses in the area were constructed between 1980-1985 and 10 per cent after 1985.
There are two types of constructions o f greenhouses in the Urla-Seferihisar: iron constructed glass greenhouses and wooden constructed plastic greenhouses. Consruction type and size o f the greenhouses depend on economic capacity of the farmers. Plastic covered greenhouses are dominant in this area but, glass greenhouses prefened by the farmers having sufficent economic capacity.
Size of greenhouses is little in Urla-Seferihisar generally. Accordig to their area:
% 60 of the greenhouses is 1000-3000 m2
% 28 cf the greenhouses is 3000-5000 m2
% 12 cf the greenhouses is 5000 m2 >
Two kinds of crops are grown in the greenhouses. Flowers such as rosa. frezia. gelbera, clovepink. chrysantheum are grown in 65 per cent o f the greenhouses o f the area and vegetables such as cotlettuce, cucumber, green pepper, tometoes in 35 per cent of them.
Distribution of the greenhouses and variety of the crops depend on water supply, transportation o f the products and marketing possibilités. The greenhouses are generally occur along the main roads and near sufficent water sources.
Greenhouse cultivation has played an important role on the increasing o f socio-economic level o f the people living in the Urla-Seferihisar area However, still there are some technical problems on the greenhouse cultivation in this area related to irrigation, drainage, heating, insect pests and diseases, packing and marketing. It seems that education and training of the people on greenhouse cultivation is the most important for advancing of this new agricultural activity in this area
