Abstract

This study aims to analyze the traumatic effects of colonialism and slavery on the characters of Caryl Phillips’s novels and to depict their struggle to overcome their sense of living in-between two cultures. A postcolonial theoretical perspective was used to investigate the cultural and psychological trauma of the characters in Phillips’s The Final Passage and Crossing the River after slavery, and the effect of these traumas on the formation of their own cultural identity. Throughout these novels, the reason for trauma is the problems the characters experience regarding their sense of belonging. The main element of trauma is separation and displacement that lead to alienation from society and their own culture. Therefore, diasporic identity and lack of identity are the causes of trauma. Nash, Martha and Travis fail to insist on adopting a new homeland and a new identity. Characters who are aware that they should forget as long as they try to belong cannot escape from understanding how to remember when they understand that they should forget. The aim of this study, in which slavery and colonialism issues are dealt with in the light of trauma theory, is to show the identity crisis and belonging problems of diasporic lives to the reader.

CARYL PHILLIPS’IN SEÇİLMİŞ ROMANLARINDA SÖMÜRGE VE KÖLELİK DENEYİMLERİNİN TRAVMATİK KARAKTERİ

Year 2020, , 151 - 166, 25.10.2020
