Abstract

Edebiyat bir işe yarar mı, yaramalı mıdır ve ne işe yarar soruları edebiyat bilimcileri meşgul ederken edebiyat öğrencilerini ve genel edebiyat okurunu da düşündürür. Bu makale edebiyatın salt sanatsal bir uğraş olmaktan öte pratiğe dönük bir faydası bulunduğundan hareket ederek bu konuda son derece özgün yaklaşımlı bir eser kaleme alan edebiyat bilimci Felski’nin teorisine başvurmakta, teorinin ayrıntıları aktarıldıktan sonra gözlemi yapılmaktadır. Felski edebiyat yapıtına öncelik verdiği ve temelde okur odaklı bir yaklaşım benimsediği teorisini dört ayak üstüne yerleştirir: tanıma, büyülenme, bilgi ve şok. Edebiyatın faydası edebî yapıtın okur üstündeki bu etkileri üstünden ölçülür. Bu anlamda, bu makaleye de gözlem nesnesi olarak, yayınlandığı günden bu yana onlarca dilde, milyonlarca nüsha satan, üçüncü film uyarlamasının yakın zamanda pek çok ödül almasıyla konu olarak hâlâ güncel olduğunu gösteren Batı Cephesinde Yeni Bir Şey Yok romanı seçilmiştir. Romandan Felski’nin teorisinin incelendiği pek çok örnek aktarıldıktan sonra edebiyatın yararlılığına ilişkin elde edilen çıkarımlar sonuç bölümünde derlenmiştir.

What Is Literature Good For: All Quiet on the Western Front

Abstract

The questions of whether literature is useful, whether it should be useful, and what it is useful for occupy literary scholars, but also literary students and general readers of literature. This article, starting from the fact that literature is not only an artistic endeavor but also has a practical utility, refers to the theory of the literary scholar Felski, who has written a highly original work on this subject, and makes observations after presenting the details of the theory. Felski places his theory, which prioritizes the literary work and adopts a reader-centered approach, on four pillars: recognition, enchantment, knowledge and shock. The usefulness of literature is measured in terms of these effects of the literary work on the reader. In this sense, the object of observation for this article is the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, which has sold millions of copies in dozens of languages since its publication, and whose third film adaptation has recently received many awards, showing that it is still topical. After citing many examples from the novel in which Felski's theory is analyzed, the conclusions on the usefulness of literature are compiled in the conclusion.
