BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA AND THE PROCESS OF NATIONALISM IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

Abstract

Nationalism was the key instrument in the disintegration process of the Ottoman Empire. It has also had a fundamental impact on the nation-states that we have witnessed from the 18th century to the present day. However he lack of consensus on its definition has made it one of the most controversial concepts. Nationalism in the Balkans differs radically from the nationalism which laid the foundations for statehood in Western Europe. Balkan nationalism has its roots in an ethno-linguistic consciousness that was shaped by the revival of Orthodox Christianity and the opposition to the Islamic order embodied by the Turks. Those engaged in the study of nationalism tended towards different definitions. One of the aims of this analysis is to elucidate why what one defines as nationalism is excluded by the other. It is tried to explain that nationalism is not just an ideology through the example of the Balkans and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In this context, it is discussed how ethnic minorities lived safely within the Ottoman millet system and how this situation suddenly changed. The stages of transformation of the nationalism movement into separatist movements contributed by the great powers in the Balkans and Bosnia-Herzegovina were examined. As a result of our study, it was seen that nationalism corresponded to the oldest division in history, the discrimination of us and them, in the age of nation states and ideologies. It was emphasized that this idea carries the feeling of being included in a whole (we/nation), is the basis of continuity in nationalization and the basic dynamic of the formation of a nation-state. It was determined that the Sublime Porte contributed to the acceleration of the movement towards nationalism, partly by its own will and partly as a result of the heavy pressures of Europe. Our findings also show that it contributed to the acceleration of the Sublime Porte's shift towards nationalism, partly of its own accord and partly due to the heavy pressure from the Europeans. Another issue examined in this article is how the nationalist movements that affected the Balkans in the 19th century led to the fate of Bosnia being left in the hands of the great powers, and the transformation that Bosnia and the Bosnian people went through in this process.
