Global technology transfer and intellectual property challenges in food hygiene innovation: A path forward

Abstract

In increasingly globalized food systems, the integration of advanced food hygiene and safety technologies has become essential for protecting public health and ensuring product quality. This review examines the role of technology transfer in bridging the gap between academic research and industrial implementation within the food sector. Attention is given to the contribution of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) in facilitating the commercialization of emerging solutions, including blockchain-based traceability systems, artificial intelligence-driven predictive analytics, and nanotechnology-enabled smart packaging. The study further explores the intellectual property (IP) challenges that arise during the transfer of such technologies, with emphasis on regulatory diversity, collaborative IP arrangements, and international legislative frameworks. In addition, future research priorities are identified, focusing on IP protection strategies for emerging technologies, open innovation approaches, and the need to balance technological advancement with public health considerations, particularly in developing regions. The review concludes by highlighting the importance of a harmonized global policy framework that supports equitable access to food hygiene technologies while fostering sustained innovation across complex food supply chains.
