CANCER PATIENTS' RELATIVES/ CAREGIVERS: THEIR EXPERIENCES AND NEEDS

Abstract

Cancer, one o f the life-threatening a nd chronic diseases, directly or indirectly affects a large num ber ofpeople. An increase in the number of patients diagnosed with cancer also leads to anincrease in the num ber of people who provide çare to these patients. Having a family member diagnosed with cancer alters the lives of ali people in the family. Anxieties an d despair experienced with the patient member of the family both create a huge emotional burden a nd encumber patients' relatives with additional a nd unusual roles a n d responsibiiities. Patients' relatives/caregivers are defined as "the backbone" o f cancer healthcare process in both health and social Services ali över the world.Caregivers have a variety of responsibiiities of cancer-related heaith çare that indudes a time span starting with the diagnosis and ending with termination o f life. While taking part in ali dimensions of health çare such as physical, emotional, social, spiritual a nd financial, they try to m anage it with little knovviedge. Relatives of the patient are supposed to simultaneously assist the patient a nd meet their own needs in a changing lifestyle. Faced with dem ands exceeding their own resources in this period, caregivers m ight experience tension, feeling ofbeing overloaded as well as various physical a nd mental disorders. Challenges that caregivers encounter m ight have a negative impact on patients' well-being as well. İt is know n that the needs of patients' relatives/caregivers who struggle with these challenges are not addressed in the present healthcare system a nd there is a lack ofstudies in literatüre.The aim of this compilation is to cali attention to these people who play an indispensable role in ali of the stages of cancer, yet who are neglected, give 'Information about their needs and emphasize the importance ofevaluating caregivers' needs systematically

KANSER HASTALARININ HASTA YAKINLARI/BAKIM VERİCİLERİ: YAŞADIKLARI VE GEREKSİNİMLERİ

Abstract

Yaşamı tehdit eden ve kronik hastalıklardan biri olan kanser, doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak birçok insanı etkilemektedir. Kanser tanısı konulan hasta sayısının zaman içerisindeki artışı, kanser hastasına bakım veren kişi sayısında da artışa yol açmaktadır. Ailede kanser hastasının olması tüm üyelerin yaşam akışını değiştirmektedir. Hasta olan aile üyesiyle ilgili yaşanan kaygılar, çaresizlikler duygusal yük sağladığı gibi, hasta yakınına ek ve alışılanın dışında roller ve sorumluluklar da yüklemektedir. Sağlık ve sosyal hizmetlerde dünyanın her yerinde hasta yakını/bakım vericiler kanser bakımının "omurgası" konumunda tanımlanmaktadır.Tanıdan yaşam sonu döneme kadar geçen süreci kapsayan kanser bakımında bakım vericilerin birçok sorumlulukları vardır. Kanser hastasının bakımının fiziksel, duygusal, sosyal, manevi, ekonomik tüm boyutlarında yer alırken bunu çok az bilgi ile sağlamaya çalışmaktadırlar. Hasta yakını değişen yaşam biçimi içinde hem hastaya yardımcı olması, hem de kendi gereksinimlerini karşılaması gerekmektedir. Bu dönemde bakım vericiler kendi kaynaklarını aşan taleplerle karşılaşınca gerginlik, aşırı yüklenme, çeşitli fiziksel ve ruhsal hastalıklar yaşayabilmektedirler. Bakım vericinin yaşadığı güçlükler hastanın sağlık durumu üzerinde de olumsuz etkiye sebep olabilmektedir. Yaşadıkları güçlüklerle baş etmeye çalışan bakım vericinin mevcut sağlık hizmetinde gereksinimlerinin karşılanmadığı ve literatürde yeterince araştırma konusu olmadığı görülmektedir.Bu derlemenin amacı; kanser sürecinin tüm aşamalarında vazgeçilmez yeri olan ancak ihmal edilen bu kişilerin yaşadıklarına dikkati çekmek, gereksinimleri hakkında bilgi sağlamak ve bakım vericilerin gereksinimlerinin sistematik olarak değerlendirilmesinin önemini vurgulamaktır
