Heavy Metal Levels in Muscles Tissues of Some Marketed Crustacean and Molluscs species, in Mersin
Abstract
The study was carried out to determine the levels of Cr (total), Mn, Ni, As (total) and Sn in squid (Loligo
vulgaris), cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) from the markets of Mersin,
Turkey. Metal analysis of the tissue samples were carried out using ICP-MS system. Cr (total), Mn, Ni, As
(total) and Sn in tissue samples ranged between 0.05-2.23, 0.07-1.13, 0.01-0.81, 3.03-45.09 and 0.02-1.32 mg
kg-1 wet weight (w.w.), respectively. Cr concentrations were found below the detectible limits in all
P.semisulcatus samples. Avarage metal concentrations in all samples were found lower than the provisional
tolerable daily and weekly intake levels (PTDI, PTWI) and seemes no risks for human consumption. But for S.
officinalis, inorganic As levels found quite close the reference limit’s and can cause health problems to
consumers, in routine and excess amounts of consumption.
