Effects of Using Terms in Biology Classes on High School Students’ Understanding the Contents

The term issue is one of the most deterministic aspects of the education. Particularly, the scientific and occupational education is ultimately executed by terms. At the biology classes, the subjects are transferred to students by using terms. Those terms are used in forms of Turkish spelling of terms in their original language. The effects of using this method that the spelling the terms, on students’ appreciation remain unknown. In the current study, the effects of using terms on understanding the biology contents of high school students have been investigated. The study has been conducted on the 9th and 10th-grade students at National Education Ministerial Çapa High School. The students were tested for their understanding of the texts with terms in foreign language and with only Turkish words and were asked some questions. In total 280 students had been incorporated into this test consisting of 140 students in each group. The results of the experiment have been subjected to dual T test. Higher correct answers were given to the questions based on the text written in Turkish (without terms). Though, the significant difference has not been detected between the compared groups. The foremost reason of that can be the improved perception of terms by students who took foreign language classes. Besides, inappropriate and insufficient Turkish terms could have degraded the perception. However, replication of this kind of experiments on various grades and student groups might develop the current results.
