Is the Widespread Use of Electronic Cigarettes a Fatal Threat?

Abstract

The increasing use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has led to a notable rise in poisoning incidents related to these devices, highlighting significant health risks. Commonly known as electronic puffs (e-puffs), these devices, which vaporize nicotine and other chemicals, are associated with nicotine toxicity, a major cause of poisoning. This issue poses a particularly high risk to children and adolescents, especially when nicotine-containing liquids are misused. Symptoms of e-puff poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tachycardia, and neurological manifestations such as seizures, are primarily caused by the rapid absorption of nicotine. In severe cases, respiratory failure may occur due to the chemicals in e-cigarette liquids. Immediate intervention in the emergency department is crucial, involving symptomatic treatment, fluid therapy, antiemetics, and, in severe cases, intubation and ventilation. With the growing use of e-cigarettes, the importance of public health awareness, particularly in managing nicotine poisoning in emergency settings, becomes evident. Increased education and public health initiatives are necessary to mitigate the risks posed by e-cigarette use, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children and adolescents.
