IMPACT OF CONCEPT MAPPING AND NOTE-TAKING IN TEACHING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO STUDENTS' ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Abstract

The aim of the study, in this study the respiratory system subject which takes an important place in teaching science and technology courses has been taught by concept maps, note-taking technique and note-taking technique compared with traditional teaching methods to find out whether there is a meaningful difference between students' perception and memorization levels while listening. The study sample was consisted of students (N=80) who are at 6 grade and were taught in two different classes in a primary school in Diyarbakir city center during 2010-2011 educational year. The experimental model with pre and post control groups was used in the study. The class where the concept maps and note-taking technique were used was marked as the experiment group and the other class where the traditional note-taking methods were used was marked as the control group. The respiratory system achievement test whose reliability score is 0, 74 was used as the means of data collection. It contained 22 questions. The study was ended in 8 weeks. The obtained data were evaluated by using SPSS-17. T-test analytical techniques were used on the analysis of the data. The significance level was considered as 0.05. The study's results which are mostly on the experimental groups' behalf shows that It seems it is much more effective to teach the lessons subjects by concept mapping instead of using traditional teaching techniques.

FEN ve TEKNOLOJİ ÖĞRETİMİNDE KAVRAM HARİTALARI ile NOT TUTMANIN ÖĞRENCİLERİN AKADEMİK BAŞARISINA ETKİSİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, fen bilgisi eğitiminde; kavram haritaları ve geleneksel öğretim yöntemiyle not tutma tekniklerinin "dinlediğini anlama becerisi ve hatırda tutma düzeyleri" arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farkın olup olmadığını belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu amaçla fen bilgisi eğitiminin önemli konularından biri olan "solunum sistemi" seçilmiştir. Çalışmanın örneklemi, 2010-2011 öğretim yılında Diyarbakır/merkezde bulunan bir ilköğretim okulunun farklı iki 6. sınıfında öğrenim gören 80 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada ön-son test kontrol gruplu deneysel model kullanılmıştır. Kavram haritaları ile not tutma tekniğinin uygulandığı şube deney, geleneksel not tutma öğretim tekniğinin uygulandığı şube kontrol grubu olarak belirlenmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak "Solunum Sistemi Başarı Testi" kullanılmıştır. 22 sorudan oluşan bu testin güvenirliği 0,74 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Deneysel etkinlikler 8 hafta sürmüştür. Veriler, SPSS-17 paket programı ile çözümlenmiştir. Verilerin analizinde t-testi tekniği kullanılmış ve anlamlılık düzeyi 0.05 olarak alınmıştır. Bulgulara göre hem deney hem de kontrol grubunun başarılarında bir artış olduğu saptanmıştır. Ancak kavram haritası ile not tutma tekniğinin kullanıldığı deney grubu lehine anlamlı sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır.
