TIKTOK ALGORITHMS AND LIVE STREAMING: ENHANCING ENGAGEMENT THROUGH TAPPING AND VIRTUAL GIFTS

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of interaction within live streaming on the TikTok platform, focusing on engagement mechanisms such as virtual gifts and tapping, and their impact on sustaining viewer participation. A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, utilizing non-participant observation to monitor a convenience sample of live streams that appeared randomly on the For You page over a one-week period (March 27 – April 4, 2025). The research aimed to examine how TikTok’s algorithms enhance engagement and visibility, while analyzing content creators’ strategies for retaining audiences and attracting further interaction. Psychological and social effects on viewers were also investigated, alongside the influence of timing, content type, and creator popularity on engagement and viewership. The key finding indicates that TikTok’s algorithms tend to prioritize entertaining and highly interactive content, which substantially boosts engagement and visibility—particularly for live streams featuring a high frequency of taps and valuable virtual gifts. This suggests that digital interaction is largely governed by algorithmic economic incentives.

Ethical Statement

This study follows ethical guidelines for digital research. It relies on non-participant observation of publicly available live streams on TikTok. No personal data or private identities of users were collected or stored. The research ensures the anonymity of the observed subjects and focuses solely on analyzing algorithmic patterns and interaction mechanisms (tapping and virtual gifts) for academic purposes.
