The Posthuman Subject in the Desktop Film: The Construction of Terminal Identity in Searching (2018)

Abstract

This study examines how the subject is constituted in the desktop film. Constructing its narrative entirely on a computer or mobile device screen, the desktop film departs from the convention of representing the character through a physical body, rendering them present instead through profile images, message logs, and search records. In the existing literature, this form has largely been discussed in terms of its technical properties, historical origins, and effects on the spectator, while the mode of subjectivity it produces has not been subjected to systematic examination. The aim of this study is to analyse the form of subjectivity produced by the desktop film through Scott Bukatman's concept of terminal identity and Rosi Braidotti's theory of the posthuman subject. The research is conducted within a qualitative research approach on the film Searching (Chaganty, 2018). In the analysis, the film is examined along three axes: agency as interface, the subject as data, and the interfacing of affect. The findings demonstrate that the source of action is not concentrated in a singular subject, that characters exist on screen only through mutually contradictory data records, and that affect is delegated to interface operations. The study argues that the desktop film, beyond being merely a new narrative technique, is a cinematic form that renders visible a shift from the classical humanist subject towards a posthuman subjectivity.

MASAÜSTÜ FİLMDE POSTHUMAN ÖZNE: SEARCHING (2018) FİLMİNDE TERMİNAL KİMLİĞİN İNŞASI

Abstract

Bu çalışma, masaüstü filmde öznenin nasıl kurulduğunu incelemektedir. Anlatısını bütünüyle bir bilgisayar ya da mobil cihaz ekranı üzerinden kuran masaüstü film, karakteri fiziksel bir bedenle temsil etme geleneğinden uzaklaşarak onu profil görüntüleri, mesaj dökümleri ve arama kayıtları aracılığıyla var etmektedir. Alanyazında bu biçim ağırlıklı olarak teknik nitelikleri, tarihsel kökeni ve izleyici üzerindeki etkileri bakımından tartışılmış, ürettiği öznellik biçimi ise sistematik bir incelemeye konu edilmemiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, masaüstü filmin ürettiği öznellik biçimini Scott Bukatman'ın terminal kimlik kavramı ile Rosi Braidotti'nin posthüman özne kuramı aracılığıyla çözümlemektir. Araştırma, nitel araştırma yaklaşımı içinde Searching (Chaganty, 2018) filmi üzerinden yürütülmüştür. Çözümlemedr film; arayüz olarak faillik, veri olarak özne ve duygulanımın arayüzleşmesi olmak üzere üç eksende ele alınmıştır. Bulgular, eylemin kaynağının tekil bir öznede toplanmadığını, karakterlerin ekranda ancak birbiriyle çelişen veri kayıtları aracılığıyla var olabildiğini ve duygulanımın arayüz işlemlerine devredildiğini göstermektedir. Çalışma, masaüstü filmin yalnızca yeni bir anlatım tekniği olmanın ötesinde, klasik hümanist özneden posthüman bir öznelliğe doğru gerçekleşen bir kaymayı görünür kılan bir sinema biçimi olduğunu ileri sürmektedir.
