Determination of Some Heavy Metals in Oil Sunflower Seeds Grown in The North of Turkey

Abstract

In this study, the contents of some heavy metal (B, Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) were determined in total of eighteen seeds of sunflower obtained from six regions cultivated in Central Black Sea Region. The results in the study were obtained using ICP-MS instrument. As a result of the research, the amounts of Cd and Pb in the samples analyzed were found to be in the range of 00.00-0.06 μg kg-1 and 00.00-1.07 μg kg-1, respectively. The highest element content in all the examples was iron (13.14-61.04 μg kg-1), zinc (34.11-54.12 μg kg-1), copper (15.68-20.7 μg kg-1) and manganese (12.72-20.20 μg kg-1) were obtained while boron (04.82-10.33 μg kg-1), aluminium (00.00-13.12 μg kg-1) and nickel (0.88-07.74 μg kg-1) had followed the element. The lowest element content was Cobalt (0.037-0.12 μg kg-1). As a result, the heavy metal content found in the sunflower seeds grown in the Central Black Sea region was under the boundaries that do not pose a threat to human health.
