PARENTS’ VIEWS ON CONSCIOUS CONSUMERISM DISPOSITIONS OF PUPILS TAUGHT SOCIAL STUDIES COURSES

Abstract

Present study aims to explore parents views on pupils’ conscious consumerism dispositions after the pupils were taught social studies courses through 1-3 grades of primary education. The participants of the study consisted of 208 pupils, -120 female and 88 males, attending 4th grades of primary school in Adıyaman during 2013-2014 academic year. The participants were chosen from seven primary schools randomly. The study was carried out in a descriptive survey model. The data for the study were collected using “conscious consumerism questionnaire” developed by the researchers. The questionnaire was developed from the attainments prescribed in “dispositions of conscious consumer” of the skill entitled “effective benefaction from sources”. The participants scored 120,61 average conscious consumerism disposition points out of maximum 150. The participants scored relatively lower averages in defining and practicing distinguishing characteristics of conscious consumer, reflecting on the relation between commercials and consumers’ rights and awareness how commercials manipulated their opinions respectively. The higher academic achievement they had in previous grades, social science courses and current class, the higher averages they were found to obtain. Parents’ perception of the schools’ general performance had a significant relation with conscious consumerism disposition as well. The variables such as number of children in the family, average income of the family, participant students’ gender were found not to be significant in determining characteristics of conscious consumer. The perception of one of the parents his/her partner as a conscious consumer was found to be a significant variable in grading pupils as conscious consumer. Certain suggestions were made in the light of the findings.
