Engagement of Individuals in Health Decisions and Communication in Evidence-Based Medical Practices

Abstract

This study addresses the involvement of individuals in health-related decision-making and communication processes within the context of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) practices. In today's healthcare environment, the rapid access to information and the continuous updating of medical knowledge have made it imperative for physicians to base their decisions on scientific evidence. However, challenges in physician-patient communication, deficiencies in health literacy, and inequalities in access to information can limit the effectiveness of evidence-based practices. The study elaborates on the history, core principles, and significance of EBM in clinical decision-making, and evaluates factors that enhance patient participation in healthcare decisions. With the growing emphasis on patient-centered care, the need for patients to have a greater voice in healthcare services is highlighted, and health literacy is shown to play a critical role in effective decision-making processes. Furthermore, the relationship between evidence-based medicine and communication is examined, and the effects of communication on patient safety, treatment adherence, and health outcomes within the physician-patient interaction are discussed. The impact of technological advancements and digitalization on health communication is also explored, with particular attention given to strategies that promote patient engagement and shared decision-making processes. In conclusion, evidence-based practices play a vital role in improving the effectiveness and quality of healthcare services. Effective health communication enables patients to make informed decisions and supports their active participation in treatment processes. In this context, it is essential for healthcare professionals to improve their communication skills, adopt a patient-centered approach, and effectively utilize digital health technologies. This study aims to contribute to the development of strategies that enable individuals to participate more actively in health-related decision-making.
