PODCASTS İN TİMES OF CRİSİS: DİGİTAL SOLİDARİTY, INFORMATİON, AND NARRATİVE PRACTİCES DURİNG EARTHQUAKES AND THE PANDEMİC

Year 2025, Volume: 3 Issue: 2, 54 - 71, 26.12.2025

Abstract

This study emphasizes the critical importance of timely, accurate, and accessible information during crises and examines the strategic role of podcast journalism within this context. In diverse crisis settings, such as earthquakes and pandemics, the potential of podcast content to provide information, enhance accessibility, offer psychological support, and strengthen social solidarity has been analyzed through both theoretical literature and case studies. The research focuses on podcasts produced during the earthquake and COVID-19 pandemic periods, with a total of eight podcast series selected from Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan. Selection criteria included crisis-focused content, platform accessibility, global diversity, and coverage of both institutional and independent producers. Specific episodes from each podcast series were evaluated through thematic content analysis and digital engagement data.
The study observes the practical manifestations of functions frequently highlighted in the literature, such as combating misinformation during crises (Berry, 2006), enhancing public health awareness (Liu ve O’Neill, 2020), and fostering social connections in digital environments (Stewart, 2021). Within this framework, podcast publications are found to play a complementary role in addressing the limitations of both traditional and new media channels. The findings suggest that podcasts should be regarded not only as sources of information but also as platforms for digital solidarity, channels for psychological support, and mediums of cultural memory..

Podcasts in Times of Crisis: Digital Solidarity, Information, and Narrative Practices During Earthquakes and The Pandemic
