Recently developed identity and nationalism studies
argued the nationalist problematic in the context of modernity/modernization
criticism. Without denying the ‘‘macro’’ scale, nationalist ‘‘discourse’’ have
been focused to identity and nationalism on a ‘‘micro’’ scale. It suggests to
determine the perspectives of a range of social practices such as culture, customs,
behavioral patterns and lifestyles that are implemented and experienced where
the national identity is imagined and built by itself. The basic thesis of this
paper is one of these practices, ‘‘food’’ (eating and drinking culture, kitchen
variety, food politics, etc.), constitutes one of the cultural components for
explaining identity and nationalism. It proposes two different approaches in
relation to food, national identity and nationalism: unofficial/from base to
top and official/from top to base. In order to understand these approaches,
this paper will explain the argument at the level of the subjects (individual,
private sector and state) and exemplifications (food culture and national
brands).
