Effects of Dietary Green Tea Powder on Performance and Antioxidative Status of Broiler Chickens
Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of dietary green tea powder on growth performance and some blood metabolites of broiler chicks. Day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were divided 4 treatments groups with similar live weight mean (42.49±0.32 g/bird), containing 20 birds each. The birds were fed a basal diet (control group) or a 2, 4, and 8 g/kg green tea powder-supplemented diet for 5 weeks. Feed and water are given ad libitum. Data were collected on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and blood metabolites [total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)] in the experiment. The results showed that performance and carcass slaughter characteristics were not affected by dietary supplementation with green tea powder compared with the control group. Serum oxidative stress index and ALT activities were increased by green tea powder supplementation (from 2 g/kg to 8 g/kg). These results suggest that the present doses of green tea powder supplementation in broiler diets do not improve performance or oxidative capacity, and additional studies are warranted to better identify the optimal inclusion levels.
