Abstract

Determination of Chlamydia abortus Seropositivity in Arabian Thoroughbred Horses in Şanlıurfa

Year 2021, Volume: 18 Issue: 3, 226 - 230, 01.12.2021

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the seropositivity status of Purebred Arabian horses which were intense in the Şanlıurfa province and its central districts in terms of Chlamydia abortus (C. abortus) which is a zoonotic agent. For this purpose, serum samples taken from 180 breeding Purebred Arabian horses between September 2019 and August 2020 were tested according to manufacturer's instructions, by using a commercial ELISA kit to detect C. abortus antibodies. Horses were randomly selected and all were hand-raised pedigree horses. At the end of study, 3 out of 180 sera were found as positive. This study is the first to be conducted on horses in our region. Determination of anti C. abortus antibodies indicated the presence of the disease in the area. Therefore, it was considered that precautions should be taken against C. abortus infection for the prevention of economic loss, promotion of animal welfare, and its zoonotic impact. In addition, it was thought that further studies which include more samples and advanced methodology would be necessary in order to demonstrate all infection status more prominently in the region
