Abstract

Abstract

In this study is aimed to present humerus, femur and symphysis mandible fractures and their treatments in two brown bear cubs (Ursus arctos). Animals are moving away from their natural habitats due to the food shortage in nature and approaching the social areas more, they are injured due to accidents or falling from the rocks while escaping. In the anamnesis of two baby bears aged 3-4 months who were brought to our clinic, information was obtained from a traffic accident in one case and falling from a height (from rocks) in the other case. As a result of the clinical and radiological examinations of the bear cubs, it was diagnosed with left humerus and left femur dysphyseal fractures in one case, and symphisis mandible fractures in the other case. Following the administration of 2 mg/kg xylazine hydrochloride to the animals, isoflurane anesthesia was administered with a mask. Operations were performed under anesthesia. In the first case, the fractures were fixed with Steinmann medical pin and compression plate. In the second case, the fracture was fixed by applying Steinmann medical pin and cerclage. After being taken into postoperative care, one of the bears died, while the other one was discharged one and a half months later and sent to the Karacabey Ova-
korusu Bear Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center in Bursa.
