INVESTIGATING THE LINKS BETWEEN MOTHERS’ EMOTION REGULATION SKILLS AND MIND MINDEDNESS AND THEIR CHILDREN'S EMOTION REGULATION SKILLS

Abstract

The relationship between mothers and their children's emotion regulation skills investigated in terms of mothers' social-emotional skills, meta-emotional skills, and maternal mind-mindedness. In line with this objective, the current study was conducted with 74 mothers who had at least one child between the ages of 6-14. The surveys were carried out by sharing the research link, which included the questionnaires and scales, with the mothers in the online environment. Mind-mindedness measurement to evaluate how mothers describe their children, The Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test to evaluate mothers' ability to recognize other people's mental states and emotional expressions, Emotion Adjustment Scale to measure their children's emotion regulation skills, Meta Emotion Scale and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire to measure mothers' emotion regulation skills were presented respectively. As a final measurement, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was applied to control the mothers' current depression, anxiety and stress levels. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical software. Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient and Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression Analysis were carried out. The findings showed that the most important predictor of children's emotion regulation skills was the reappraisal dimension of mothers' emotion regulation skills. No significant relationship was found between mothers' mind mindedness and mind-reading skills from the eyes, and children's emotion regulation skills. The findings were discussed in the light of the literature.
