İn Ottaman-Turkish medicine, there were some medical and surgical
manuscripts which are known as "Hulasa" (summary). One of them was
vvritten by "Physician Hayrettin." There is no biographic knowledge about
the author, though it is estimated that he would live in 15th century. A copy
of this manuscript is in the Library of Medical History Departm ent of
Ankara University's Medical School. In this article, this m anuscript is
analysed.
According to a back-note, the book was copying by Ebubekr Sofyavi in
1677. The manuscript has four chapters. The fırst of them is related with
"tibb-i nebevi" (prophet's medicine). Here, especially the saigns of prophet
Muhammed related vvith cleanliness and dietary measures, showing the vvays
of being healthy and protecting the health are covered in this chapter.
The second chapter contains fifteen sections devoted to aııatomy and
physiology. These sections cover some topics such as muscles, veins, stomach
and intestines, kidney and bladder...
The theory of medicine is the subject of the third chapter. The signs of
recovery and poor prognosis, the methods of blodd letting... ete. are in the
fifteen sections of this chapter.The last chapter vvhich contains 46 sections is the longest one of the
manuscript Some topics covered by this sections are the kinds of psychiatric
dieases, paralysis, penoumonia, jaundice....
As it is common nearly for ali manuscripts of the time, the humoral
pathology hypothesis has an im portant role and a Central position in
explanaüon and treatment of the diseases.
