Investigation of Musculoskeletal System Problems in Dentists According to Work-Related Parameters and Exercise Habits

Abstract

Purpose: To examine musculoskeletal system problems in dentists based on years of experience, workplace, and exercise habits. Material and Methods: A total of 203 dentists were included in the study. Individuals were divided into two separate groups according to years of experience <10 (n=116) and ≥10 years (n=87); workplace as public (n=74) and private (n=129); and exercise habit as present (n=89) and absent (n=114). All dentists were administered the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Neck Disability Index (NDI), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP). Results: Dentists with ≥10 years of experience had higher ODI and NHP-pain scores, and lower HADS-anxiety, NHP-social isolation, and NHP-emotional reaction parameters (p<0.05). No significant differences were found between groups based on workplace (p>0.05). Dentists with exercise habits exhibited lower pain intensities in the neck, shoulder, back, and elbow, as well as lower ODI and NDI values (p<0.05). Conclusion: As dentists gain more experience, they might encounter issues related to lower back pain. However, adapting to the demands of the profession over time can lower the risk of psychosocial exposure. Instilling exercise habits in dentists is a crucial factor in reducing musculoskeletal system exposures.

Diş Hekimlerinde Çalışma ile İlişkili Parametrelere ve Egzersiz Yapma Alışkanlığına Göre Kas İskelet Sistemi Problemlerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Diş hekimlerinde çalışma yılı, çalışma yerine ve egzersiz yapma alışkanlığına göre kas iskelet sistemi problemlerini incelemektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya 203 çalışan diş hekimi dahil edildi. Bireyler çalışma yılları <10 (n=116) ve ≥10 yıl (n=87); çalışma yeri devlet (n=74) ve özel (n=129); egzersiz alışkanlığı olan (n=89) ve olmayan (n=114) şeklinde ayrı ayrı iki gruba ayrıldı. Tüm diş hekimlerine Nordic Kas İskelet Sistemi Anketi, Oswestry Özürlülük İndeksi (OÖİ), Boyun Özürlülük Anketi (BÖA), Tampa Kinezyofobi Skalası (TKS), Hastane Anksiyete ve Depresyon Skalası (HADS) ve Nottingham Sağlık Profili (NSP) anketleri uygulandı. Sonuçlar: Çalışma yılı ≥10 yıl olan diş hekimlerinin OÖİ ve NSP-ağrı değeri daha yüksek, HADS-anksiyete, NSP-sosyal izolasyon ve NSP-emosyonel reaksiyon parametreleri daha az bulundu (p<0,05). Çalışma yerlerine göre gruplar arasında fark bulunmadı (p>0,05). Egzersiz alışkanlığı olan diş hekimlerinin boyun, omuz, sırt ve dirsek bölgelerindeki ağrı şiddetleri, OÖİ, BÖA değerleri daha düşüktü (p<0,05). Tartışma: Çalışma yılı arttıkça diş hekimlerinde bel ağrısına bağlı özür gelişebilir; ancak yıllar içerisinde mesleğin getirdiği iş yüküyle başa çıkmaya alışılması nedeniyle psikososyal maruziyet daha az olabilir. Diş hekimlerinde egzersiz alışkanlığının kazandırılması kas iskelet sistemi maruziyetlerini azaltmada önemli bir faktördür.
